April Goals

Ok, so with only one day left to go before April 1, I’ve select my small and big goals for the month of April. Without further ado, here they are with a brief explanation after each if I feel like it:

1. Say hello or good morning to someone in the elevator everyday.

This one is to try and see if i become more sociable to strangers as I do this exercise. Of course I can already see situations where I will face a whole elevator full of people and have to say hello to all of them, which could be difficult. Or if there’s a bunch of people waiting for the elevator at a floor, and then waiting to get into the elevator before saying hello. So maybe I should try to refine this goal. Say hello or good morning to someone who I first meet in the elevator if I’m getting on alone, or say hello to someone when I’m waiting for the elevator alone. I think these are doable goals. I’ll save taking on groups of people later.

2. Clean my room for 5 minutes everyday.

This is simple, I just want to keep my living area clean. I figure that taking an hour to clean my room every couple weeks is just too taxing, so I wonder if I can spend 5 minutes to pick up a few things and then after 5 minutes, force myself to stop. We’ll see how this works and hopefully this will keep my room clean for the duration of the month, which actually might help me do other things better.

3. Cook a new recipe for myself at least once a week, and hopefully twice.

This is twofold. One is that learning to cook is a valuable skill that should serve me well for the rest of my life. Two is that I hope by the end of the month that I’ll be able to consistently cook for myself and thus save money on food, which translates to more things I can do with my money :)

4. Wake up at 7am everyday.

This one doesn’t have much explanation except that I feel like I need more time in the morning to wake up and reflect upon the day before heading into it. Lately I’ve been spending the hour between 9 and 10 at work just zoning out and getting ready for work. This is nice since I force myself not to do any hard work until after 10, but I think it’s rather unproductive if I look at how much time I’ve just wasted. Hopefully this can be paired with the 5 minutes of cleaning everyday.

5. Play a game of chess everyday

Ok, so I recently acquire a children’s computer chess program, and sadly, on a skill rating of 1 to 20, I can beat the level 3 computer only once in awhile. I admit that I suck at chess, but hopefully by playing one game everyday, even if I’m losing it, I’ll learn to think better, and the idea is that by the end of the month, I’ll be better than level 3. If not, then maybe I should find another way to develop my brain.

6. Learn Sign Language

Useful for long distance visual communication. My girlfriend is also learning sign language, though she is much better than me. I feel like this is a good way to communicate with her as well as stretch my mind to learn a completely different way of communicating.

7. Bonus: Buy a dry erase board and put it on my wall to keep track of what I’m doing and remind me to do it.
